HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover women's golf team will look to build off its opening weekend victory as they travel to compete at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16.
LINEUP: The Panthers will return four of their five scoring players from their team championship group at the Olivet (Mich.) Labor Day Classic. Senior Sam Pease (Cincinnati, Ohio), juniors Maddie Cody (Brownsburg, Ind.) and Allison Goodwin (Lebanon, Ind.), along with sophomore Dayna Dale (Andrews, Ind.) all return to the lineup this weekend. Sophomore Emma Kate McMurty (Terre Haute, Ind.) will round out the Panther five this weekend. McMurty appeared in two events last season and will be making her debut for the 2018-19 campaign at Illinois Wesleyan.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: A loaded field of 17 teams will grace the presence of Ironwood GC this weekend, highlighted by two-time defending champion, Washington (Mo.). The Bears were one of four teams ranked in the national top 25 preseason poll, conducted by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). Other teams ranked in the poll that are competing this weekend are DePauw (11), Illinois Wesleyan (15) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (25). Grinnell (Iowa), another competitor this weekend, was also receiving votes in the national preseason poll. Two additional Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference institutions will be in attendance as well, including Franklin and Rose-Hulman.
THE TRACK: Tournament play will be held in Normal, Ill. at Ironwood Golf Course. Ironwood GC is a par 72 championship layout, featuring four sets of tees that range from 5,400 to 7,100 yards. The course has hosted numerous high school and collegiate events, as well as C.D.G.A. and U.S.G.A qualifiers. For more information and the course layout, click here.
LAST TIME OUT: With its home invitational getting washed out due to the weather last weekend, Hanover is making just its second appearance of the fall season. The Panthers won their only other event, taking first place at the eight-team Olivet Labor Day Classic. In unfavorable conditions, and on a longer course, the Blue and Red posted a two-day score of 676 (337-339), while also having a trio of golfers earn top 10 recognition. Goodwin and Cody placed second and third, respectively, with scores of 157 (78-79) and 164 (80-84). The 157 total strokes for Goodwin set a new career low for a 36-hole event. Dale also picked up her first career top-1- finish, recording a score of 177 (87-90).
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Panthers will be appearing in the IWU Fall Classic for the second straight year after adding it the schedule last fall. Hanover placed 10th out of 17 teams last season, recording a 36-hole team score of 652 (333-319). The second round total was the team's second best round, relative to par, of the 2017-18 season. Cody paced the Panthers with a 161, while Dale's Sunday 79 is still her career-best round.
UP NEXT: The Blue and Red will break for one week after the conclusion of the IWU Fall Classic and will next be in action Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, at the HCAC Preview. The conference preview event will be hosted by Earlham in Liberty, Ind., at Liberty Country Club, the site of the HCAC Championship later this fall.
