AURORA, Ill. – With just under 15 minutes to play in a scoreless match, junior Cassidy Evanson (Carmel, Ind.) scored to give the Hanover women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Aurora (Ill.) in the fourth, and final match, of the Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic.
The win is the first of the 2017 season for the Panthers as they improve to 1-1 overall, while Aurora falls to 0-2 in the early going.
Hanover out-shot the Spartans 5-1 in the first half, but the two teams played through a scoreless first half after being shutout in their season-opening matches.
Aurora flipped the script in the second half and out-shot the Panthers 7-3, but at the 75:05 mark, Evanson recovered a loose ball and beat the Spartans' goalkeeper for her, and the team's, first goal of the season.
The two teams finished with eight shots apiece, while Aurora had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Emma Debolt (West Chester, Ohio) and freshman Charlotte Verbanic (Columbus, Ind.) combined for the shutout in goal for Hanover. Debolt got the win as she stopped all five shots she faced.
The Panthers will return home Wednesday, Sept. 6 for their first home match of the season against Spalding (Ky.). The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Hanover, Ind.
