HANOVER, Ind. – Sophomore Maisyn Garland (Rochester, Ill.) scored her first goal of the season, and fellow sophomore Emma DeBolt (West Chester, Ohio) stopped all five shots she faced to help the Hanover women's soccer team defeat Wittenberg 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Panthers have now won three straight to improve to 3-1-0 overall, while Wittenberg takes its first loss of 2017 to fall to 1-1-1 overall.
The match was scoreless until late in the first half when Garland found the back of the net for the first time this season, and third time in her career, for the lone goal of the match. Freshman Natalie Fausz (Alexandria, Ky.) had the assist, the first of her collegiate career.
DeBolt and the Hanover defense did the rest. While the Panthers out-shot the Tigers 10-4 in the first half, Wittenberg turned the tables in the second with a 13-3 advantage in shots. The Tigers also had eight corner kicks to only two for Hanover, but were unable to score.
DeBolt evened her record at 1-1 on the year and recorded her first career shutout with five saves in as many chances.
The Panthers are back in action Sunday, Sept. 10 when they host Augustana (Ill.). Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. in Hanover, Ind.
