HANOVER, Ind. - After honoring the team's four seniors, the Hanover women's soccer team scored five second-half goals to defeat visiting Defiance 6-1 on Senior day Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Panthers have now five straight, and eight of the last nine, to improve to 12-3-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 1-12-1 overall and 0-6-1 in league play.
The ball spent most of the first half at Defiance's end of the field, but it was the Yellow Jackets' Kat Wicher that scored first. Wicher hit a shot at the top of the goal for her second of the season and a 1-0 Defiance lead in the 36th minute.
It looked as though that would be the only scoring of the first half, but with 25 seconds remaining in the opening period, junior Leah Ellis (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) took a shot from the left side of the goal and scored for the first time this fall to tie the match at one apiece.
Sophomore Maisyn Garland (Rochester, Ill.) gave the Panthers a lead in the 53rd minute with her team-best sixth goal of the year. Senior Daria Volker (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) and junior Claire Stockwell (Burlington, Ky.) had an assist each on the score.
The score changed again less than two minutes later when freshman Sydney Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) beat the Defiance keeper for her third goal of the season. Garland recorded the assist, and Hanover led 4-1.
Sophomore Abby Howes (Terre Haute, Ind.) scored in the 69th minute off an assist from senior Abby Shroyer (Zionsville, Ind.), and Stockwell added an unassisted goal in the 86th minute to cap the scoring and give the Panthers a season-high six goals in the contest. The goal was the second of the year for both Howes and Stockwell.
The Panthers tied a single-game high for the season with 32 total shots on the day, while limiting the Yellow Jackets to only two shots, with both coming in the first half. Brock, Garland, and junior Shannon Hawkins (Carmel, Ind.) led the team with five shots each. Sophomore Emma Debolt (West Chester, Ohio) improved to 8-3 in goal with the win.
Hanover's final two regular season matches will be played on the road with the first one Wednesday, Oct. 25 against Mount St. Joseph (Ohio). Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
