GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Hanover women's tennis team opened the 2017-18 season this past weekend at the Georgetown (Ky.) Invitational.
Hanover competed against three scholarship institutions, including two nationally ranked NAIA schools, Georgetown and Campbellsville (Ky.), and 2016-17 NCAA Division II National Tournament qualifier, West Virginia State.
In singles action, the Panthers earned three victories, with two coming from freshmen Haley Parker (Leo, Ind.) and Addison Laker (Indianapolis, Ind.). Parker, who appeared as Hanover's No. 4 singles competitor, earned a straight set, 6-4, 6-4, victory over the host, Georgetown.
Laker also picked up a straight set win, as she competed in the No. 7 slot. The freshmen logged a 6-2, 6-3 decision against West Virginia State.
Recording Hanover's third singles victory was junior Ruth Gaston (Indianapolis, Ind.). Gaston won in the No. 8 singles flight, versus Campbellsville, 6-3, 6-4.
Adding a 7-5 doubles win in the No. 3 slot was junior Susie Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind.). The two defeated a pair of athletes from Campbellsville in the victory.
Head coach Eric LaRue was pleased with his team's effort in the opening tournament of the season, stating, "The team competed very promising against some strong, nationally ranked programs. We won some matches and we were close in a few losses. Overall, it was a good test for us to get ready for conference play this upcoming weekend."
The Panthers will open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on the road this Saturday, Sept. 16, as they travel to face Earlham at noon.
