TIPP CITY, Ohio – Concluding the regular season portion of its 2017-18 schedule, the Hanover women's tennis team defeated Wittenberg (Ohio) Saturday afternoon, 7-2.
The Panthers jumped out to an early advantage, taking two of the three doubles matches. Hanover followed it up with five victories in singles competition. With the win, the Blue and Red improve to 15-5 this season. Wittenberg falls to 3-2 overall.
Just as they have done all season long, junior Susie Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind.) cruised to another doubles victory, as an 8-4 win in the No. 2 slot Saturday improved their season record to 17-3. Winternheimer would go on to add a 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 decision in the No. 3 singles match.
Freshman Haley Parker (Leo, Ind.) also need to go the distance to earn a singles win, picking up a point in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5. Parker and sophomore Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind.) tallied an 8-1 decision in the No. 3 doubles spot, going to 15-5 on the season. Jones also took the second singles spot in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Winning the Nos. 5 and 6 singles matches were freshmen Addison Laker (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Mia Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.). Laker won 7-5, 6-3, while Katzenberger stayed perfect this season, 7-0, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Hanover's 15 wins is just one shy of tying the program record for most in a single season, which the squad set in 2016-17. The Panthers will now wait to see what the future holds, as their next competition will come in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Blue and Red won the HCAC Tournament in the fall to earn the league's automatic bid into the national event this spring.
