HANOVER, Ind. – As the 2018-19 season approaches, we conclude our season preview series of the Hanover women's tennis team with a look at the freshmen and sophomores.
The Panthers are coming off a record-setting season in 2017-18, as the squad produced a 16-6 overall record, its fifth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship, its fourth conference tournament championship in five years and its first NCAA National Tournament victory, a 5-0 triumph over Webster (Mo.) in the opening round.
Hanover will have the luxury of returning nearly its entire roster from last season, losing just one senior, Alana Feeley, who is now a volunteer assistant coach for the team. Highlighting the group of sophomores back this fall is Haley Parker (Leo, Ind.), who was the HCAC Freshman of the Year and honorable mention selection a year ago.
Parker posted a 14-5 singles record, solely in the No. 4 position last season, while going 6-1 in conference play. The then freshman also teamed with Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind.) to produce a 16-6 doubles mark, including a 7-0 performance in conference action. In combined singles and doubles play, Parker was 13-1 in HCAC matches.
Sophomores Addison Laker (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Mia Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.) return this fall after stellar first years with the Blue and Red. Both Laker and Katzenberger competed mainly in singles competition, going 12-4 and 7-0 respectively. The duo also combined to produce an 11-0 mark at Nos. 5 and 6 singles during conference play.
Also returning this season is Savannah Dever (Knoxville, Tenn.). Dever is joined by a trio of first year athletes who will all be looking to make an impact in the lineup this fall.
Included in the group of newcomers is Maddie Shannon (Anderson, Ind.), who is coming off a stellar career at Lapel High School. Shannon logged a school record 75 wins at Lapel, while also earning all-state recognition her junior and senior seasons. The freshman was also a two-time sectional singles champion, while her team was a four-time sectional and regional champion.
The Panthers are slated to open the 2018-19 season with the Georgetown (Ky.) Invitational Saturday, Sept. 8. Hanover will then open conference and dual play the following Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host Anderson.
