HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover women's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season in style Saturday afternoon, defeating Anderson at home, 9-0.
With the victory, the Panthers (1-0) have now won their season opener for the third time in the last four seasons. Hanover also earned its seventh straight triumph in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference openers, running their current overall conference winning streak to 41 matches.
Five different Panthers posted wins in singles and doubles play. Senior Susie Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind.) took the top doubles spot, 8-1. Farrell and WInternheimer each conceded three games or fewer in straight-set singles victories, at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
In the second doubles slot, junior Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind.) and sophomore Addison Laker (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned an 8-5 decision. Jones competed in the top singles spot as well, winning 6-3, 6-0. Laker appeared in the fifth singles match, losing just one game over two sets.
The combo of senior Ruth Gaston (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Caroline Millard (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave HC its second 8-1 decision during doubles play, taking the No. 3 match. Gaston also won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
Picking up the ninth team point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles was sophomore Mia Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.). Katzenberger now has an unblemished 8-0 singles record in her collegiate career.
Hanover will look to continue its unprecedented regular season conference winning streak when they welcome Earlham next Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Panthers and Quakers are slated for a 4:30 p.m. start at the Zeddies Tennis Center.
