INDIANAPOLIS – After an eventful and successful stretch, Hanover women's tennis senior Ruth Gaston (Indianapolis, Ind.) has been announced as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the Week.
During a week that featured three conference contests, Gaston produced a combined 6-0 record in doubles and singles play. Hanover also defeated Mount St. Joseph, Defiance and Manchester all by a count of 9-0, securing the program's sixth straight HCAC regular season title and running its current conference regular season win streak to 48 matches.
To open the week, Gaston earned an 8-0 doubles victory with junior Lizzy Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.) in the No. 2 slot against MSJ. The senior then followed with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in the No. 2 singles spot versus the Lions.
The second contest came at Defiance, where Gaston conceded just four total games over doubles and singles competition. She and Katzenberger tallied an 8-2 decision, before the fourth-year Panther added a 6-2, 6-0 win in singles action.
Capping the week, Gaston and Katzenberger earned another 8-0 triumph at No. 2 doubles, this time against Manchester. The senior went on to take the No. 3 singles match against the Spartans, 6-0, 6-1.
Overall, Gaston conceded just three singles games over six sets and eight total games over nine singles and doubles sets. For the season, Gaston is 9-0 in singles competition and 8-1 in doubles play.
The Panthers will now turn their attention to the HCAC Tournament, which is set to take place in Indianapolis, Ind. at West Indy Racquet Club this Friday through Sunday, Oct. 19 through 21. Hanover has received the No. 1 seed and will open tournament play in the semifinal round at 1 p.m. Saturday, against an opponent still to be determined.
