OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The Hanover women's tennis team cruised to its 13th victory of the season, defeating Oakland City (Ind.) on the road Saturday afternoon, 7-0.
The Panthers (13-4) swept the three doubles matches, conceding just three games to earn one team point. Senior Susie Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished first, taking the No. 1 slot, 6-2.
The second doubles contest was 6-0 in favor of HC, with senior Ruth Gaston (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior Lizzy Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.) competing. The duo of freshman Maddie Shannon (Anderson, Ind.) and sophomore Mia Katzenberger (Crawfordsville Ind.) took the No. 3 slot, 6-1.
All six doubles competitors for HC would go on to earn straight set victories over the Mighty Oaks (5-13) in singles competition. In 12 sets, the Blue and Red outscored Oakland City, 72-16.
Farrell allowed just one game at the No. 2 spot and finished first, ahead of Jones, who won at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1. Gaston was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 3.
Rounding out singles play for HC were M. Katzenberger, L. Katzenberger and Shannon, taking the Nos. 4-6 matches, respectively. M. Katzenberger conceded four games over two sets, L. Katzenberger won 6-1, 6-2, and Shannon earned a 6-3, 6-0 decision.
The Panthers have now concluded their regular season schedule and will next be in action at the NCAA Division III National Tournament in May. Hanover earned the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's automatic bid into the national tournament by winning the league's postseason tournament for the fifth time in six years back in the fall.
