BEREA, Ohio – One day after splitting a pair of matches on the first day of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference – Ohio Athletic Conference Crossover, the Hanover women's volleyball team split two more on day two with a win over John Carroll (Ohio) and a loss to Baldwin Wallace (Ohio).
The Panthers opened the day against Baldwin Wallace (17-0). After falling 25-18 in the first set, Hanover won set two 25-20 to even the match. The Yellow Jackets then won sets three and four 25-18 and 25-15 for the four-set victory.
Seniors Courtney Crawford (Louisville, Ky.) and Kelsey Brandvik (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted strong performances for the Panthers. Crawford tallied 11 kills in 16 attempts for a .688 hitting percentage, while Brandvik had 10 kills for a .381 hitting percentage.
Hanover bounced back and quickly dispatched of John Carroll (4-13) in three sets in only an hour and six minutes. The Blue and Red won 25-16, 25-13 and 25-15 to move to 12-5 overall on the season.
After limiting three opponents to a negative hitting percentage in 2016, the Panthers do it for the first time in 2017 as the Blue Streaks hit -.009.
Senior Kristin Goben (Finchville, Ky.) led the Panthers with eight kills, seven blocks, and four digs. Crawford, Brandvik and junior Margo Main (West Lafayette, Ind.) had seven kills each, while junior Claire Dennis (Bloomington, Ind.) added six kills to go along with 10 digs and six blocks.
Senior Monique Huynh (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished with 33 digs and two service aces in the two matches. Juniors Haley Alexander (Martinsville, Ind.) recorded 38 assists and three service aces, and classmate Abby Crump (Indianapolis, Ind.) notched 31 assists on the day.
For her efforts, Goben was named to the all-tournament team. In four matches, the senior totaled 28 kills, 29 digs, and 13 blocks.
Hanover will return home Saturday, Sept. 30 to host Bluffton (Ohio) in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Start time is set for 2 p.m. in Collier Arena.
