BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Hanover Panthers posted a strong weekend after taking on a competitive field as part of the Sommer Spiketacular hosted by Bluffton University. The Blue and Red finished the week 1-2 overall after defeating Geneva in four sets.
GAME ONE GENEVA: The Panthers opened the weekend with Geneva on Friday evening where the Blue and Red took down the Golden Tornadoes in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 33-31, 25-18).
Hanover was led in the contest by sophomore Emma Rolf (Lebanon, Ind.) with a game-high 16 kills and 17 digs. Senior Ally Williams (Fountaintown, Ind.) led the defense for the Panthers recording a game-high 30 kills.
As a team, Hanover posted a .130 hitting percentage with 12 blocks.
GAME TWO ONU: The Blue and Red carried the momentum into Saturday as they dominated the nationally ranked Polar Bears in set one 25-12. The Panthers surged ahead 4-0 after back-to-back kills by Rolf gave them the early advantage. Hanover used a series of runs capped off by an eight-point rally to blow the game wide open en route to the 25-12 set one victory.
The Panthers led for much of set two as a Rolf service ace put the Blue and Red on top 8-5. Hanover achieved its largest lead of the set moments later as a kill by senior Carlie Burson (Corydon, Ind.) pushed the advantage to 16-11. However, ONU continued to chip at the Panther lead tying the set at 23-23 following a kill by Mahon. They would go on to claim set two, 27-25.
In the final two sets, the Polar Bears came roaring back as they used a series of rallies to claim the set three (25-18) and set four (25-15) victories.
GAME THREE HEIDELBERG: In the weekend wrap up, the Panthers found themselves locked in another tough non-conference matchup with the Student Princes, falling in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, 29-27). Hanover was led in the contest by sophomore Maddie Edwards (Jasper, Ind.) with a team-high eight kills, while sophomore Kelsey Ketcham (Mishawaka, Ind.) dished out 23 assists and added 14 digs. As a team, the Blue and Red hit .165 with a team total 34 kills. The Panthers also registered a game-high 69 digs .
ON THE WEEKEND: The team finished the weekend hitting .180 with 151 kills, led by Rolf with a team-high 31 kills. The Panthers averaged 13.73 kills per set, while dishing out 12 assists per contest. The Blue and Red return to action on Friday, September 13 as they welcome Capital as part of the Hanover Invitational. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
