Balance Attack Leads Volleyball Past St. Mary-Woods

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover volleyball team used a balance attack to defeat St., Mary-Woods on Tuesday evening in straight sets, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14).

As a team, Hanover (11-5 overall) hit .266 with a game-high 42 kills.

The opening set saw the two teams exchange points for several serves before junior Emily Diehr (Greenfield, Ind.) went to work behind the service line leading a Panther four-point rally to give HC the 8-4 advantage. The Blue and Red attack had success at the net as freshman Adrianne Vance (Indianapolis, Ind.) hammered home a kill that extended the HC advantage to 14-8 before freshman Josie McClara (Jamestown, Ind.) got in on the action with a kill of her own.

Sophomore Maddie Edwards (Jasper, Ind.) tallied a kill late in the set that gave HC it's largest lead 22-16 before a Pomeroys error sealed the set one victory.

Hanover found themselves trailing early in set two as St. Mary-Woods rattled off the first three points before the Panthers were able to break the serve. The Blue and Red rallied back as they knotted the contest at 9-9 before a huge block by Edwards and Diehr gave HC the 10-9 lead. The team carried the momentum into the rest of the set as a sophomore Bailey Eveland (Plymouth, Ind.) kill extended the lead to 14-10. Back-to-back kills by Rolf and Vance would be all the Panthers needed to claim the set two victory, 25-17.

The Blue and Red flipped the script in set three as sophomore Kelsey Ketcham (Mishawaka, Ind.) deemed clutch behind the service line giving HC the early 3-0 lead. However, St. Mary-Woods would remain poise and slowly chip at the Hanover lead pulling within 9-8 before a big time kill by Edwards halted the charging Pomeroys. Hanover followed it up with a four-point run that gave them the 16-10 advantage. Sophomore Maura Dankoski (Fishers, Ind.) sealed the straight set victory for the Panthers with back-to-back kills, 25-14.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, October 5 as they open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action with Defiance. First serve is set for noon.
