HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover women's cross country team fell to Indiana University – East in its season-opening meet at home in the Hanover Invitational.
The Panthers finished the two-team, 5k-race with 32 points on a rain-soaked course, while IU – East had a team score of 24 to win the meet.
Junior Morgan Hamilton (Centerville, Ind.) was the first Hanover runner across the finish line. Hamilton finished fifth overall with a time of 22:42.4. Right behind Hamilton was sophomore Ariel Barlow (Francesville, Ind.) and junior Amanda Stump (Garrett, Ind.). Barlow was sixth in 22:59.5, while Stump followed in seventh with a time of 23:06.4.
Freshmen Caitlin Naghdi (Carmel, Ind.) and Cameron Ray (Vevay, Ind.) rounded out the top five for the Panthers. Naghdi ran a time of 24:44.1 to place 11th, and Ray finished in 25:02.0 for 13th overall.
The Red Wolves' Ashley Toschlog was the individual winner. The sophomore won in 21:01.9, almost 39 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Four Hanover alumni also participated in the meet. A pair of 2016 graduates in Rachel Smith and Kaleigh DeBeck placed third and fourth overall. Smith ran a time of 21:49.6, while DeBeck finished in 22:03.8.
Hanover will next travel to West Lafayette, Ind. Saturday, Sept. 15 to compete in the Indiana Intercollegiates. The meet is set to begin at 3 p.m.
