WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Hanover women's cross country team had six personal records to highlight its performance at the Wilmington (Ohio) Jenna Strong Fall Classic Friday evening.
Pacing the Panthers was freshman Arig Tong (Columbus, Ind.), who posted a five-kilometer time of 18:28.4 to place sixth overall in the field of 308 runners. Tong's time was the fastest for a NCAA Division III runner Friday evening and moves her into third on the program's all-time performance list.
Also earning top-100 finishes and personal records were junior Ariel Barlow (Francesville, Ind.) and senior Amanda Stump (Garrett, Ind.). Barlow crossed the finish line at 20:08.5, while Stump followed shortly after at 20:18.1. Both runners improved their career-best 5K times by over 20 seconds.
Rounding out the team scoring lineup were senior Morgan Hamilton (Connersville, Ind.) and junior Caitlyn Naghdi (Carmel, Ind.). Hamilton clocked in at 20:42.8 and Naghdi in 20:45.7, with both marks setting new personal bests.
Other Panthers in action were junior Madison VanWinkle (Moores Hill, Ind.) and freshmen Brianna Medcalf (Central, Ind.) and Zoe Adams (Louisville, Ky.). VanWinkle was the sixth Panther to "PR", recording a time of 23:52.5. Medcalf was competing in her first collegiate 5K, as she finished in 20:57.0. Adams, coming off her career-best 5K time in Louisville two weekends ago, tallied a time of 21:16.5 Friday.
As a team, Hanover finished 11th in the overall field of 35 teams, which included schools from all three NCAA divisions, as well as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Panthers were the fourth Division III team in the standings, trailing only regionally-ranked Ohio Northern, Wooster (Ohio) and Muskingum (Ohio).
Hanover can consider its final tune-up as a success, as the team will next be in action at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 27. Following the conference meet, HC will compete in the NCAA Division III Regional Championships Saturday, Nov. 10. Both of the remaining meets will be held in Shelbyville, Ind. at Blue River Park.
