SHELBYVILLE, Ind. – Led by an individual runner-up finish from freshman Arig Tong (Columbus, Ind.), the Hanover College women's cross country team finished fourth overall at the 2018 HCAC Championship Meet held at Blue River Memorial Park.
Tong, whose time of 22:42.1 for the six-kilometer course earned her Freshman of the Year recognition, found herself in a fierce three-way battle for the win coming into the final 300-meters of the race. Defending champion and eventual winner Alexis Cash of Bluffton University ultimately pulled away, but Tong turned in the highest individual finish for a Hanover female in over a decade. Her time also catapults her up to sixth all-time in Hanover history.
While Tong earned first-team all-HCAC honors for her efforts, two other teammates were named to the honorable-mention team as well. Junior Ariel Barlow (Francesville, Ind.) finished 13th overall with a time of 24:16.9, which ranks 20th all-time in Hanover history. She was joined by senior Amanda Stump (Garrett, Ind.) who improved ten spots from last year's race to finish 18th.
Manchester University won the team event with a low score of 55 points, just edging out Bluffton who had 61. Hanover had a team total of 86 points.
Next up for the Red and Blue will be the Great Lakes Regional Meet on Saturday, Nov. 10. That race will also be held at Blue River Memorial Park and is slated to begin at noon.
