Men' soccer continues strong start to HCAC play with win at Earlham

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Hanover College men's soccer team moved to one game above .500 Saturday with a dominating win against HCAC foe, Earlham College. The Panthers bested the Quakers by a score of 2-0 to improve to 6-5 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0.

Sophomore Josh Hughes (Lafayette, La.) continued his hot streak by tallying a goal in his second straight contest. The score came in just the 12th minute and was already Hughes's third shot of the day. In fact, Hughes continued to put pressure on the opposing defense throughout the afternoon, finishing the match with eight total shots.

Just seven minutes later, Earlham forward Drew Fitzgibbon came back with a shot of his own that was saved by Hanover sophomore Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.). Bedel now has three clean sheets this season.

It took until the 67th minute for the Panthers to find the back of the net again. This time, it was freshman Leonardo Bottura (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scoring his third goal of the season.

The Quakers had one final shot at closing the gap when Fitzgibbon attempted his second shot of the day, but this one was also saved by Bedel.

Ultimately, the Red and Blue took 16 shots to Earlham's three and produced five more corners than their opponent. The win marks their fourth in a row and their third overall in conference play.

They will look to continue this success against Rose Hulman on Wednesday, Oct. 10. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on the campus of Rose-Hulman.
