Hanover, IN - The Panthers were 2-1-1 heading into today's match up against [out of conference] NCAC opponent, the DePauw University Tigers, who were 3-1-1 piror to today's contest.
Very early into the game you could tell this was going to be an up and down battle as both teams were challenging very well on defense, and taking big shots in the middle parts of the field. By the sixth minute the first goal had been netted by the Tigers, but the Panthers were quick to reset for the kick-off, and were able to capitalize and retaliated with a goal of their own six seconds later on a shot from junior midfielder
Miles McMillen.
The rest of the first half included four yellow cards (two each team) and tempers flared, but the score remained 1-1 despite Hanover being a bit ahead in time of possession and winning the foul battle four to six. Senior goalkeeper
Rodrigo Gutierrez Olvera Gonzalez saw four shots and tallied two saves, and the Panthers put three of three shots on frame, allowing two saves as well.
In the second half, the Panthers were super aggressive and continued taking big shots with long balls up the field. HC seemingly was outpacing DePauw as the Tigers seemed to be fatiguing and wearing down from the relentless offensive press of HC.
Hanover continued to pressure their opponent with a fast-paced, full-team effort and in the seventy-sixth minute the grind would pay off. Sophomore forward
Andrew Pavlisko was able to find fellow sophomore forward
Brandon Elizarraras through a scrum of defenders inside the box to put the boys up 2-1.
As the game was nearing it's end, the Tigers, after not generating any shots the entire second-half, were able to get a shot off in the eighty-ninth minute of action to tie it up at 2-2.
The match ended in a stalemate, and Hanover heads into their second game of their home-opener double-header weekend against Kenyon College feeling hungry. Kickoff is set for 4:00PM EST, after the women's soccer match.
