Hanover Surrenders Intense HCAC Battle

Box Score HANOVER, Ind. – Hanover (13-12 overall, 7-11 HCAC) concluded the regular season on Wednesday evening celebrating the memory of Lexi Riggles. Despite early success, Hanover surrendered the intense HCAC contest to Transylvania, 67-62.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freshman Emerson Vlcan led the way for Hanover with a game-high 17 points. Junior Sammy Berman had 14 points while senior Kaitlyn Lorenzi had 11 points with seven rebounds.

Senior Alexis Wines tallied 11 points for the Blue and Red with four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Hanover used a strong inside game to challenge the Transylvania defense. Vlcan led the attack as the high low appeared successful early with the Panthers surging ahead 10-5. Defensively, Hanover forced several Pioneer turnovers, including five in the first quarter.

The second period saw HC extend the lead to 21-15 as Vlcan netted six points in the opening three minutes. The unselfish play was key as Lorenzi found success on the backside of the Transylvania zone. She helped propel them to a 26-17 advantage. The Pioneers were able to cut the difference to 26-22 at the intermission.

Lorenzi remained red hot to start the second half, netting a three-pointer followed by a Berman pull-up in transition for the 31-25 lead at the 7:28 mark. Vlcan completed the old fashion three-point play as Hanover entered the fourth quarter leading 42-38.

Both teams cranked up the defensive intensity in the final frame making it nearly impossible to score. The bread and butter for the Blue and Red continued to be transition baskets as Wines drained a three-pointer before senior Lily Ernstes sank a two-pointer in the paint. Hanover clung to a 51-44 lead at the midway point.

The three-pointer was crucial for Hanover down the stretch as Lorenzi and Wines both netted clutch shots. Berman was the spark the Panthers needed as she continued to net her signature runner in the lane, 61-53. Transylvania got their first lead of the second half with just under a minute to play capping a 14-0 run en route to the win.
