Panthers split singles matches in 5-4 loss to D2-Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Hanover men's tennis team split six singles matches Saturday afternoon at Bellarmine, but its upset bid over the NCAA Division II institution fell short, 5-4.

Sophomore Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) picked up a pair of victories, as he and classmate Mitchell Minniear (Muncie, Ind.) recorded HC's lone doubles point, winning the No. 3 match, 8-3. Carrico went on to take the No. 1 singles contest in straight sets, 7-6, 6-0. Minniear also competed in the singles competition, winning a total of nine games over two sets.

Junior Brent Barrett (New Palestine, Ind.) and Alec Bates (New Albany, Ind.) picked up the other two points for the Panthers (0-3) at the No. 3 and 5 single spots, respectively. After dropping the opening frame 6-1, Barrett rallied to win the final two sets 6-4 and 6-2. Bates also went the distance, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The duo teamed up in the No. 2 doubles slot as well but fell 8-5.

Hanover will continue its spring slate with three matches in two days next weekend. The Blue and Red open the stretch with a neutral site contest against Belhaven (Miss.) at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 17.
