Smith wins fifth straight singles match; Panthers fall at Centre, 6-3

Box Score

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Senior Dakota Smith (Greenfield, Ind.) earned two victories Saturday, but the Hanover men's tennis team fell to Centre (Ky.), 6-3.

Smith teamed up with sophomore Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) in the No. 2 doubles slot, as the duo outlasted their Centre (3-5) opponents, 9-7. The senior later went on to pick up a straight set, 7-5, 6-2, win in the No. 3 singles match. Smith's singles victory was his fifth straight, improving him to 8-3 on the season.

Earning the Panthers' other singles win was junior Brent Barrett (New Palestine, Ind.). Barrett picked up his fifth singles victory of the 2017-18 campaign by winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The junior and his classmate, Alec Bates (New Albany, Ind.), nearly gave Hanover a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but ultimately suffered an 8-6 loss in the No. 3 spot.

The Blue and Red then lost the first four singles matches that finished, all in straight sets, resulting in the 6-3 final score.

Hanover will now turn its attention to a road match at Wittenberg (Ohio) next weekend. The Panthers and Tigers are set for a 1 p.m. start, Saturday, March 17.
