Second half scoring spurt sends Panthers past Sewanee, 3-0

Box Score

HANOVER, Ind. – In unfavorable weather conditions, the Hanover women's soccer team earned a 3-0 home win over Sewanee (Tenn.) Saturday afternoon.

With precipitation falling throughout, Hanover was able to slip three shots past the Tigers' defense, all in the second half, improving to 3-1-0 on the season. Sewanee drops to 0-2-1 with the loss.

All three Panther goals came from freshmen, with Autumn Boothby (Mount Orab, Ohio) picking up her team-leading second score of the season. Kelsey Hughes (Noblesville, Ind.) and Anna Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied their first collegiate goals Saturday as well.

Hanover held an 8-0 shot advantage in the first half despite not scoring. The Blue and Red did have a pair of close calls early though, as a Hughes shot was saved and senior Claire Stockwell's (Burlington, Ky.) attempt hit the crossbar. Overall, HC had three shots on goal over the first 45 minutes of play.

The scoring opened early in the second stanza, as Boothby dribbled through the Tiger defense, striking the back of the net from 10 yards out in the 48th minute. Sewanee had three of the match's next four shots, but freshman Amanda Carmosino (Noblesville, Ind.) saved the only try on goal.

Carmosino was called on to make just the one stop in the match, earning her second consecutive clean sheet.

A little less than 20 minutes after Hanover recorded the first goal of the match, they added a second score. Smith, who was inside the six-yard box, received a cross from classmate Ruby Kate Gray (Lexington, Ky.) and gave HC a 2-0 lead with just under 25 minutes left to play.

As the clock turned to the 79th minute, Hughes scored from inside the six-yard box, as she was assisted by Boothby.

Overall, Hanover held a 19-3 advantage in total shots, including an 11-1 edge on goal. Boothby paced the Panthers with five attempts, three on goal, while all four of Hughes' shots came on goal.

The Blue and Red, winners of three straight, will look to ride the current wave of momentum into a pair of road matches next week. Hanover will open the stretch with a 6 p.m. contest at St. Mary's Tuesday, Sept. 11.
