Panthers cruise in third straight win, defeat Defiance 9-0

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College men's tennis team cruised to its third straight victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Defiance in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action at home, 9-0.

The Panthers (5-6, 2-1 HCAC) took all three doubles matches to secure an early advantage. Sophomore Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and freshman Connor Garrison (Louisville, Ky.) won the No. 1 spot, 8-5. The junior duo of Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) and Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned an 8-1 decision at No. 2.

Singles competition saw the Blue and Red conceded no more than one game in any set. Freshmen Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and Jalen Simmons (Indianapolis, Ind.) both swept their competitors at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively, 6-0, 6-0.

Carrico and sophomore Jed Fajt (Greencaslte, Ind.) each dropped just one game at No. 2 and 4, posting matching scores of 6-1, 6-0. The trio of Carrico, Fajt and Asplund are now carrying five-, three- and three-game winning streaks in singles play.

Freshman Pablo Gallart (Serra, Spain) took the top singles contest by a count of 6-1, 6-1. Defiance (2-11, 0-6 HCAC) did not place anyone in the bottom doubles or singles spots to give Hanover the final 9-0 decision.

The Panthers have now shutout three opponents during the 2018-19 season.

The Blue and Red will look to cap the week with a 3-0 mark when they travel to the University of Indianapolis Tennis Center Sunday, April 14, for a noon match against HCAC-rival Franklin.
