Box Score 2 SEWANEE, TENN. - The Hanover men's tennis team traveled south this weekend taking on Piedmont and nationally ranked Sewanee. The Panthers posted a 1-1 overall record defeating Piedmont 7-2 on Friday night before falling to host Sewanee 9-0 on Saturday.
On Friday, the Panthers opened the evening with two key victories in doubles action as the team of senior Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.) and senior Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) captured No. 2 doubles by a score of 7-6. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of sophomore Pablo Gallart (Serra, Spain) and sophomore Keith Asplund (Jeffersonville, Ind.) joined forces to capture the 8-2 victory propeling Hanover to the 2-1 lead.
In singles play, Gallart went to work taking No. 1 singles by score of 6-2, 6-1. The success continued for the Panthers as Carrico won his match at No. 2 singles with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Asplund deemed clutch for the Blue and Red as he secured the road triumph with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
Helmers went on to claim No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-3, while teammate junior Roger Trombley (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) captured No. 5 singles by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 10-4.
In the teams contest with Sewanee, the Panthers found themselves trailing 3-0 early as the Tigers swept doubles action.
However, Carrico provided a competitive match at No. 2 singles where he played his partner to an exciting three set tiebreaker. The senior fell in the match 7-6, 3-6, 5-10.
The Blue and Red return to action on Sunday, February 23 as they travel to Chicago to take on Praire State. The match is set for 10:00 AM.
