DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Hanover men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon falling to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Defiance on a last second layup 74-73.
The Panthers move to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in HCAC action.
Hanover was paced in the contest by sophomore
Matt Munoz (Indianapolis, Ind.) with a double-double netting 20 points with 10 rebounds. Senior
Noah Williams (Jeffersonville, Ind.) added 18 points, while sophomore
Max Greenamoyer (Zionsville, Ind.) netted 16 points.
After entering the half trailing the Yellow Jackets 42-36 the Panthers looked to claw their way back. They opened the second half with a Greenamoyer three-pointer followed by a Williams deep ball at the 15:46 mark that pulled HC within 52-45.
They continued to chip at the lead as an 8-0 run paced by Munoz saw the Panthers pull within 62-59 with just over seven minutes remaining. Hanover tied the game minutes later before taking the lead off a Munoz free-throw with just 10 seconds remaining connecting on back-to-back blows, 73-72.
However, Defiance had other things in mind as they were able to go the length of the floor for the last second layup and score en route to the win.
Hanover returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 15 when they travel to Rose-Hulman. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
