Late goal lifts Hanover to 2-2 draw

HANOVER, Ind. –  Senior Kelsey Hughes (Noblesville, Ind.) deemed clutch for the Panthers as she netted the game tying strike late in regulation to secure the 2-2 draw with Trine.

Haover (1-0-2 overall) was led on the afternoon by Hughes with three shots, two of which landed on frame.

The opening stanza saw Trine strike first as they were able to beat the Panther backline for the 1-0 advantage. However, Hanover continued to pressure the Thunder box forcing a Trine miscue that resulted in a Panther penalty kick. Junior Kate Donovan (Carmel, Ind.) dealt the dagger as she knotted the contest 1-1 at the 32-minute mark.

Trine added one final score in the opening half as they connected on a free kick from just outside the 16-yard box to claim the 2-1 advantage.

Freshman Beth Cook (Goshen, Ohio) opened the second half strong for the Panthers as she charted back-to-back strikes that were saved by the Thunder keeper. They continued on the attack as senior Maggie Day (Sellersburg, Ind.) fired a shot that soared just high of frame.

With just over a minute remaining in regulation senior Kelsey Hughes (Noblesville, Ind.) delivered as she played a pass from Cook at the top of the box for the game tying goal, 2-2.

Neither team was able to capitalize in extra time as Hanover finished the contest with a game-high 28 shots, 13 of which landed on frame.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11 when they welcome Sewanee. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
