Early woes plague Panthers in HCAC Tournament action

HANOVER, Ind. -The Panthers (20-8 overall) bowed out of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday evening, falling to Rose-Hulman 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 29-31, 17-25).

Hanover saw three athletes finish with double-digit kills in sophomore Elliot Mays (Jeffersonville, Ind.), sophomore Maddie Robertson (Mitchell, Ind.), and freshman Abbey McCoy (Indianapolis, Ind.). Senior Casey Dunn (Fort Thomas, Ky.) added 36 digs.

Rose-Hulman had Hanover scrambling from the opening set as they used a small rally to claim the 9-3 advantage. Hanover regained their composure responding with a 4-0 run capped by a McCoy kill. However, Rose-Hulman continued the attack surging ahead before McCoy struck again. But RHIT secured the win with a 5-0 rally to claim the 25-22 set one victory.

Set two would see HC jump ahead 8-4 before extending the difference to 14-7 off a junior Molly Schwarzkopf (Greenfield, Ind.) kill. With all the momentum, Hanover pounced rattling off six straight points to blow the set wide open 21-9. It was just what the Panthers needed to knot the match at 1-1.

However, Rose-Hulman took the air out of Collier Arena in set three. After tying the score at 19-19 they went on the attack. Hanover looked to gain ground getting to set point on four separate occasions, but the Fightin' Engineers refused to surrender claiming the 31-29 win.

The final set would see Rose-Hulman cruise to the 25-17 match advancing victory.
