Louisville, KY - Hanover traveled to just across the Ohio River to Louisville, KY to take on the Spalding University Golden Eagles. HC is on an eight game win streak against the Golden Eagles, with an all-time record of 10-1 against the Blue & Gold.
The Panthers, hoping to build on their electric offensive performance from last week's home season-opener (vs Berry), maintained control through the first half of basketball in historical Columbia Gym (KY). Hanover was able to jump out to an early lead after senior guard
Luke Miller cashed an early three pointer, assisted by sophomore guard Cj Walls, and a two-point jumper by Miller as well.
Followed by a pair of green free throws from sophomore guard
Cam Freeman, and a defensive rebound by Freeman that lead to another conversion in the paint by
Luke Miller on the other end, HC was up 9-6 after just over four minutes of play.
There was a lead exchange at around the twelve minute mark, however after over two minutes pure "heart and hustle" defense and allowing zero points, the Panthers took the lead back and maintained it the rest of the way. Buckets from freshman guard
Jeremiah Alexander, senior forward
Coleman Sater, freshman forward Malachi Mcnair, and senior guard
Michael Donoho would propel them to a six point lead with eight minutes left.
The Golden Eagles were able to string together a few possessions, cutting the Hanover lead down to a three-point one possession game. However, the Panthers went on to close the half out up eight, 28 to 20, after a tough lay in the paint by
Coleman Sater, and a last second defensive steal by Sater that ended in a buzzer-beater three by
Luke Miller.
In the second half of action, Hanover seemed to feel the fatigue of playing such at such an exhausting defensive pace in the first. After immediately increasing their lead to ten points, HC quickly began to fall apart as Spalding looked to surge for a second half comeback. The Golden Eagles cut the Panther lead down one possession at a time, and eventually took back the lead for third lead change of the night.
Spalding was able to build some game-swinging momentum, and rally to a comeback lead of fifteen points at 56-41 after a made three with only seven minutes and fifty-seven seconds left to go in the final half of play.
The Panthers responded with a quick three of their own after another dime from Walls to Miller, followed by a quick thirty-second team-timeout by the coaching staff.
This timeout would go on to be the eventual demise of the Golden Eagles, as their lead would only dwindle away during the flurry of Blue &
Red buckets.
Hanover battled back and forth on both ends, scrapping for any chance at an extra possessions, and ultimately came out on top thanks to their undying belief in their team identity.
The final sequences of the game included a gritty defensive rebound by the freshman guard
Jack Miller that then lead to a made bucket in the paint by guard
Cam Freeman. This put the Panthers up 1, 67-66, with just over a minute left to play; and on the final possession of the game, sophomore guard Cj Walls would clinch the game with a clutch steal in the final seconds.
