Hanover Shoots Past Anderson in HCAC Opener

HANOVER, Ind. – Hanover (3-1 overall, 1-0 HCAC) pressured the Ravens of Anderson to capture the 79-62 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday evening.

The HCAC matchup opened with Hanover applying pressure to the Raven's offense in the half-court setting. The pressure appeared to frustrate Anderson as a senior Kady Clancy (Scottsburg, Ind.) steal set senior Grace Bezold (Covington, Ky.) up for the quick score, 8-2. Junior Alexis Wines (Lebanon, Ind.) added the game's first three-pointer to help propel the Panthers to a double-digit first-quarter lead, 13-4. Anderson settled into the pressure, cutting the difference to 23-15 through one period.

The HCAC Athlete of the Week Bezold picked up right where she left off last week using a nifty inside move to push the Hanover difference to 28-17. Sophomore Sammy Berman (Independence, Ky.) put in work on the offensive boards as she was able to net back-to-back scores to extend the lead to 32-17 midway through the second. The Panthers found themselves in a scoring drought that lasted nearly five minutes allowing the Ravens to cut the halftime difference to 39-34.

The Ravens used the Panther's aggressiveness towards them in the second half getting to the rim on the dribble drive to pull within 43-40. But Bezold was able to tame the Ravens as she dominated the paint, scoring off a freshman Jalynn Brooks (Erlanger, Ky.) assist. Brooks made her way into the score's column moments later getting the assist from Berman.

Wines delivered in the final quarter as the long-range ball continued to fall. With all the momentum Hanover was able to capture a 69-47 lead. They never looked back out scoring Anderson 17-15 en route to the win.

INSIDE THE STATS
Three Panthers finished in double figures led by Bezold with a double-double netting 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Berman added 19 points with four steals while senior Katherine Benter (Brownstown, Ind.) tallied 11 points.
Hanover returns to action on Friday, Nov. 22 when they take on Berry as part of the Centre Classic.
