Benter Paces Panther to Victory Over Berry

DANVILLE, Ky. – Hanover (4-1 overall) captured their first lead in the fourth quarter to knockoff Berry as part of the Centre Classic on Friday evening, 78-67.

The Panthers got off to a slow start as Berry was able to shoot themselves in front 12-4. The Hanover offense looked to make a surge using a senior Katherine Benter (Brownstown, Ind.) layup to cut the difference to 17-8 at the 2:53 mark.

The second quarter saw Hanover begin to find a groove with the senior duo of Kady Clancy (Scottsburg, Ind.) and Grace Bezold (Covington, Ky.) providing back-to-back blows, 21-16. Clancy continued to evade the defense as she connected for a jumper near the lane at the midway mark, 24-18. Benter added the final first half blow with a three-pointer that cut the difference to 38-27.

Berry opened the second half strong extending their lead with a three-pointer at the 8:43 mark. Junior Alexis Wines (Lebanon, Ind.) showed off her skills as she got to the rim following a Benter assist. Hanover pulled within 42-33 following a pair of Bezold free throws which capped a short Panther run. Sophomore Sammy Berman (Independence, Ky.) netted a pair of back-to-back blows stealing some of the Berry momentum, 47-42. Benter rallied the troops with a key three-pointer followed by a jumper with 1:08 to play in the third frame. Bezold tied the score 58-58 hitting a runner in the lane as time expired.

The fourth quarter saw the Blue and Red capture their first contest lead as Hanover rattled off nine points paced by both Bezold and Benter, 67-58. The Panthers strategized late into the quarter in hopes of securing the victory. They did just that as Benter continued to have a dominant offensive performance, netting her 29 th point off a jumper to help Hanover secure the 78-67 win.
