HC Experiences First Loss of the 2024-25 Season

Richmond, IN - The Panthers (now 4-1) fell in a one-point overtime contest to the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon Universtiy at the Earlham Classic Tournament.

The first half saw the Tartans in the driver's seat most the whole way. Hanover struggled to get anything going early on and they just weren't clicking well defensively either. Carnegie Mellon went on a twenty-four to five point run mid-way through the half to go up 39-18 with just under five minutes left. The Panthers were able to put together a small run of their own, cutting the lead down to twelve, but ultimately went into the half-time break down 31-50.

Coming out of the locker room the Panthers were refocused and ready to go from the in-bound. Locked-in defensively and now able to generate the looks they wanted through their offensive motions, Hanover rallied through the first ten-minutes of the second with a thirty to thirteen run lead by freshman forward Malachi McNair.

With under two minutes left to play in regulation, and the Tartans still leading by one possession, the Panthers committed to emptying their reserves in order to try and pull out the win. With clutch baskets down the stretch coming from freshman Malachi McNair and senior guard Luke Miller HC was able to stay within one. Then after a huge defensive stop, sophomore guard CJ Walls was able to convert a pair of free-throws with only thirty-four seconds left in regulation to go up one 74-73.

The Tartans were able to hit a mid-range jumper with only twenty seconds left, but the Panthers weren't going anywhere just yet. Freshman forward Jack Miller was able to finish at the rim through traffic and tie the game at 76-76, ultimately sending the game to OT.

The five minutes of overtime was the most exciting five minutes of the entire game as both teams exchanged buckets the entire period. In true overtime fashion, the game came down to the final seconds and despite Jack Miller burying a three-pointer in the final three seconds, HC suffered their first loss of the season 89-90.

Statistical Standouts for the Panthers Include:
Malachi McNair (Freshman Forward) - 20 Pts | 15 Reb
Luke Miller (Senior Guard) - 16 Pts | 9 Reb
Jack Miller (Freshman Forward) - 14 Pts | 4 Reb
