GRANVILLE, Ohio - Denison got out to an early lead, winning the first inning 3 to 0. The Big Red continued to dominate the game as they exploded for four more runs, making it 7-0 going into the third inning, adding three more run in the third to make it a 10-0 ball game heading into the fourth. Hanover struggled to get on base in the early innings, and those same struggles would continue through the fourth. Senior pitcher
Marcus Goodpaster would go on to throw his first no-hit inning to close out the fourth.
Â
As the second batter of the fifth inning, junior catcher
Reid Douglas would stat the Panthers first hit of the day, placing the ball out in center-left field for a double. Douglas would find his way to third base after wild pitch, followed by a ground out at third to close the inning. Goodpaster would then go on to pitch his final inning of the contest, notching a double play and a fly out to the infield, keeping the score board at 10-0.
Â
Hanover's struggles continued as they still hadn't gotten on the board through five and a half innings. In the bottom of the sixth came the first pitcher change of the day as junior
Braxton Garner took the mound in place of Goodpaster. Garner gave up three runs through the sixth and seventh innings, and a handful of decisive strikeouts, including batter who struck out looking.
Â
The eighth inning was no different for the Panthers as they still could not find a way to get on the board, while also giving up what would be Denison's last two runs, making the score 15-0 as we were headed into the ninth inning. The top of the ninth saw HC giving everything they had left as the first two batters up, junior
Sam Perkins and sophomore
Robert Carroll, both flied out. The Big Red of Denison then walked junior shortstop
Jake Danneman, let up two singles back to back to seniors
Alex Christie and
Eric Roudebush, advancing Danneman all the way to third base. Then, with bases loaded, Denison walked junior outfielder
David Newbanks, bringing
Jake Danneman home for the Panthers first run of the contest, and the final of the afternoon.
Â
The contest concluded at Denison 15, Hanover 1. Tomorrow, Hanover will play the loser of the first round match-up between Rowan University and Millikin University, for a chance to keep their tournament run alive.
