Louisville, KY - The men's soccer program from Hanover College traveled to Spalding University to take on the Centre College Colonels in the Spalding Tournament. The Panthers finished last year 9-5-5, with an HCAC finals appearance. After bringing in fourteen freshman and returning twelve seniors, Hanover is poised to be able to compete for yet another HCAC title.
The Panthers had a steadiness to their game tonight, they didn't outpace their opponent in shots, they didn't attempt a ton of corners - but they controlled the ball well and shifted across the field in unison. Centre matched Hanover's pace early on, but HC was able to get by the defensive pressure and net their first goal of the contest near the thirty-eight minute marker. JuniorÂ
Patricio Campos (Cdmx, Mexico) was the beneficiary of a lovely assist set up by freshman Kunal Chawal (Carmel, Ind.) to put the Panthers up 1-0 before heading into the break.
Coming out of half-time, Hanover kept the pressure on and kept Centre on their heels. Closing in on the sixty-ninth minute, junior
Patricio Campos was able to put another one past the keeper, this time off a double-assist from freshman
Kunal Chawla and senior
Omar Dizdar, making it 2-0 HC.
Hanover finished the game trailing in most statistical categories, except for the two that matter most - goals for and saves. Lead by senior goalkeeper
Rodrigo Gutierrez Olvera Gonzalez with 3 saves, the Panthers took the win 2-0.Â
HC looks to keep rolling through the weekend and return home 2-0 after another match-up on Sunday, at Spalding, vs Spalding at 7:30PM EST in the closing game of the tournament.
