HANOVER, Ind. – Senior
Austin Steurer (Warsaw, Ky.) broke the school record for kicking points with 178 career points to propel the Panthers past Rose-Hulman on Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion, 27-24.
The senior went a perfect 2-for-2 on field goal tries with three extra points. Junior
Matthew Weimer (Georgetown, Ind.) finished the afternoon with a game-high 284 yards and a touchdown through the air.
Hanover would find the endzone early in the first quarter as they took the ball 77 yards on 10 plays for the 7-0 advantage. Senior
Shawn Coane (Evansville, Ind.) would get the call in the red zone as he scampered in for a 10 yard score.
However, Rose-Hulman responded at the 6:48 mark in the opening stanza using eight plays to cover 70 yards and knot the contest at 7-7. The Fightin' Engineers claimed their first lead moments later as a 53 yard pass completion would see Rose take the one touchdown advantage.
The scoring frenzy continued as the Panthers provided the equalizer just seconds into the second stanza. The drive would start at the Hanover 25 yard line with senior
Walt Ballinger (Beech Grove, Ind.) taking care of the rest. Ballinger rushed ahead for 14 yards and the game tying score, 14-14.
The Panthers would claim the lead before halftime as Weimer found senior
Jared Frank (Louisville, Ky.) in the back of the endzone for another Hanover strike, 21-14.
The second half saw Rose-Hulman score a TD at the 4:06 mark in the third period to tie the game but again the Blue and Red stepped up. Traveling 71 yards on eight plays, the Panther offense set-up a 24 yard field goal attempt for Steurer. The senior delivered the blow pulling within one point of the kicking record.
He claimed the game winner in the final seconds of the contest as he made a 29 yard field goal try look easy sending it straight through the up-rights for the Panther victory.
Defensively, sophomore
Nash Murphy (Columbus, Ind.) paced the way for Hanover with a game-high eight tackles. Senior
