ALBION, Mich. – The Panthers wrapped up non-conference action on Saturday afternoon as they traveled north taking on the Britons of Albion. Hanover fell in the contest 24-14.
Leading the Blue and Red was senior
Shawn Coane (Evansville, Ind.) with 91 yards on the ground and one touchdown. Sophomore
Caleb Brewster (Hiram, Ga.) paced the defensive efforts, recording a team-high 12 tackles including three solo attempts.
The Britons would strike first in the contest as they traveled 54 yards on five plays for the 7-0 lead with 12:29 remaining in the opening frame. Albion looked to increase their lead with just under six minutes to go when the Panther defense held strong forcing a turnover on downs.
The Hanover offense built on the momentum as they found the equalizer with just 13 seconds remaining. Senior
Matthew Weimer (Georgetown, Ind.) piloted the attack, taking the offense 74 yards on 11 plays. Senior
Walt Ballinger (Beech Grove, Ind.) provided the big play Hanover needed as he and Weimer connected for a 24 yard hookup that saw HC land inside the Albion 30 yardline. Coane handled the rest as he found the back of the endzone, tying the Hanover all-time rushing touchdown record (41), 14-14.
Albion added one more score late in the first half, as they were able to connect on a 34 yard field goal that sent them into the break with the 10-7 lead.
The second half saw Hanover respond as Weimer found junior
Hunter Eads (Batavia, Ohio) on a third-and-four for a 35 yard catch and score, 14-10. However, the excitement wouldn't last long as the Albion offense continued to fire on all cylinders scoring the final touchdown with just 22 seconds remaining in the third frame, 24-14.
Hanover returns to action on Saturday, October 2 when they open Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with Anderson. The Panthers will also be celebrating Homecoming.
