Men's Soccer drops heartbreaker in sudden death PK's

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Hanover dropped a heartbreaker in sudden death penalty kicks on Saturday afternoon as part of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Rose-Hulman. The Panthers fell 5-4 after entering sudden death penalty kicks locked at 4-4.
 
Hanover was paced in the contest by sophomore Joao Domenici (Alphaville, Brazil) with a team-high five shots, two of which landed on frame. In goal, junior Luciano Salemi (Indianapolis, Ind.) played an impressive contest charting a game-high 16 saves.
 
In a game that saw Rose-Hulman dominate early, the excitement was quickly halted as Hanover forward Domenici delivered in the 16th minute. The junior delivered on a penalty kick after teammate freshman Omar Dizdar (Bardstown, Ky.) drew the foul inside the 18-yard box, 1-0.
 
The Panthers got one final look on frame in the 41st minute with senior Fernando Martin (Sao Jose Do Rio Preto, Brazil) connecting on a corner kick that landed unsuccessful.
 
Rose-Hulman made a strong push in the second half firing off three consecutive shots in the 51st minute that were denied by the Panther keeper, Salemi.
 
They finally found the game tying blow in the 78th minute with a penalty kick of their own that sent the contest to extra time.
 
However, neither team was able to find the winning strike forcing the game to be decided by penalty kicks for the second consecutive season for Hanover.
 
With the penalty kicks knotted 3-3, Rose-Hulman delivered picking up a key save before surging to the slim advantage. However, Salemi came up huge in frame making a save that ultimately forced sudden death PK's. But that is all they wrote for the Panthers as Rose-Hulman pushed ahead to the 5-4 win.
 
Hanover landed three on the HCAC All-Tournament team in Domenici, senior Sean Fleming (Louisville, Ky.), and Salemi.
 
The Panthers finished the 2022 season at 10-4-4 overall and 7-0-2 in HCAC action.
