Panthers rally to defeat Earlham in HCAC action

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover Panthers (14-4 overall, 2-0 HCAC) used a three set rally to defeat the Quakers of Earlham on Saturday afternoon inside the Collier Arena.

Hanover was led in the contest by sophomore Elliot Mays (Jeffersonville, Ind.) with 19 kills. Four Panthers finished with double digit kills while junior Maggie Schweitzer (Shelbyville, Ind.) dished out 21 helpers.

After surrendering the first two sets, the Panthers began to pounce in set three. They were able to claim the 7-3 advantage after a junior Molly Schwarzkopf (Greenfield, Ind.) kill. The rally continued as the Blue and Red posted five straight points led by the attack of Mays, 14-5. Hanover would lead by as many as 20-6 before Earlham responded. The Quakers were able to cut the difference to 24-18 before Hanover secured the win.

Set four was a very back and forth battle with Earlham surging ahead 17-9. However, the Panthers continued to fight and claw their way back into the contest rattling off seven straight points. With the momentum in their favor the Hanover attack reigned victorious forcing a five set thriller, 25-23.

The final set saw HC use a three point surge behind the service of senior Casey Dunn (Fort Thomas, Ky.). The Quakers refused to surrender knotting the contest at 14-14 when sophomore CC Shick (Fort Thomas, Ky.) landed a kill for the victory.

Hanover returns to action on Friday, Oct. 13 when they welcome Manchester as part of Homecoming weekend. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
