Baseball falls in series opener at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Panthers (0-3 overall) dropped the series with Maryville on Sunday surrendering game two of the three game series 4-3 before dropping the finale 16-12.
 
GAME TWO
Hanover jumped on the board in the top of the fourth inning as senior Jacob Dupps (Louisville, Ky.) reached first on a Maryville hiccup before a junior Conner Farnsley (Jeffersonville, Ind.) double to right center but HC on top 1-0. They added another run later in the inning as sophomore Grady Stickney (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up the RBI scoring Farnsley, 2-0.
 
However, the Scots would respond in the bottom of the sixth inning plating three runs on three hits.
 
The Panthers knotted the contest in the top of the seventh inning with junior Alex Christie (Greenwood, Ind.) providing the RBI on a single through the left side, 3-3. But Maryville got the final say scoring the winning run in the bottom half of the inning, 4-3.
 
Junior Marcus Goodpaster (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the start for the Blue and Red going five complete innings with seven strikeouts on 20 batters faced.
 
GAME THREE
In the night cap, the Panthers scored early and often as sophomore Jake Danneman (Edgewood, Ky.) plated the game's first run, 1-0.
 
Junior Gabe Gowens (Lanesville, Ind.) followed it up with a solo homer in the second inning to extend the Hanover lead 2-0.
 
The Blue and Red tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning as sophomore Sam Perkins (Louisville, Ky.) singled down the left field line scoring both sophomore Reid Douglas (Rossville, Ind.) and Farnsley, 4-0.
 
However, the Scots refused to be shutout adding four runs in the bottom of the third inning and one in the fourth inning for the 5-4 lead.
 
Stickney got the run back in the next half inning as he hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
 
But Maryville continued to remain poise as they added three runs in the sixth inning.
 
Hanover knotted the score in the top of the seventh inning with junior Eric Roudebush (New Palestine, Ind.) picking up a pair of RBI, 8-8.
 
The Scots blew the game wide open in the bottom half of the eighth scoring eighth runs on three hits. The Panthers would get four back in the top of the ninth inning but the comeback fell unsuccessful as Maryville was able to retire the side and leave three runners stranded.
 
The Panthers return to action on Friday, March 3 when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. and take on Webster and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
