Box Score 2 MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Panthers posted a 3-0 mark as part of the MC Labor Day Classic over the weekend, sweeping the final day of competition in straight sets.
GAME ONE – Huntingdon
The Panthers captured the straight set victory (25-20, 25-19, 25-14) over Huntingdon as part of their Saturday doubleheader.
In set one, Hanover found themselves trialing early when sophomore
Elliot Mays (Jeffersonville, Ind.) halted the surge. The Blue and Red tied the contest at 5-5 before rattling off three straight points for the 12-10 lead. However, Huntingdon refused to go away knotting the contest at 17-17. The Panthers remained poise landing the final three points of the set for the 25-20 win.
The back-an-forth battle carried into set two when sophomore
CC Shick (Fort Thomas, Ky.) hit a kill that propelled HC on top 7-3. The excitement was quickly dwindled as Huntingdon tied the set 13-13. Junior
Molly Schwarzkopf (Greenfield, Ind.) was the key component for Hanover as she helped HC secure the 25-19 set win from the service line.
The final set saw Hanover waste little time using a six-point rally to jump out to the 15-9 advantage. With the contest well in hand, junior Jesse Stenger (St. Leon, Ind.) landed the explanation point that secured the straight set victory.
GAME TWO – Maryville
Hanover completed the weekend sweep knocking off Classic host Maryville (25-21, 25-15, 25-13) in three sets.
Set one saw the Blue and Red jump ahead behind the attack of freshman
Abbey McCoy (Indianapolis, Ind.), 3-0. Maryville refused to be tamed flipping the script when Hanover rattled off five straight points to tie the contest 18-18. The Panther would hang on for the set one win following a Maryville mishap.
Schwarzkopf led the set two attack as she sent HC on top 6-5 from behind the service line. However, Maryville continued to battle as they knotted the score 11-11 when Hanover shut down the threat. Mays deemed the vital piece picking up a kill to send HC to the 25-15 win.
The momentum carried into the last set with HC capturing the 12-5 difference. The charge was paced by senior
Casey Dunn (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and the Panther never looked back securing the 25-13 straight set sweep.
Hanover returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 9 when they take on Capital and Otterbein.
