LEXINGTON. Ky. – The Panthers (10-6 overall, 1-1 HCAC) split a tilt at Transylvania on Saturday afternoon as part of their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener. Hanover claimed game one 10-4 before surrendering a dramatic game two 3-2.
GAME ONE
ON THE MOUND
Senior
Matthew Alter (Indianapolis, Ind.) claimed his third win of the season as he pitched six complete with seven strikeouts.
Junior
Chris Hautman (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) pitched relief, adding four strikeouts over three complete innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After surrendering the first run, the Panther offense responded. Junior
Andrew Oesterling (Batesville, Ind.) added the game tying run in the fourth inning with a single to right field, 1-1.
The Pioneers added a run in the fifth inning before the Panther attack erupted. Hanover used a seven run ninth inning to blow the game wide open.
The first RBI came from the bat of senior
Alex Christie(Greenwood, Ind.) before senior
Connor Farnsley (Jeffersonville, Ind.) doubles pushing the HC difference to 5-2. The offense continued to fire on all cylinders as Oesterling picked up another RBI followed by a sophomore
Robert Carroll (Hendersonville, Tenn.) RBI that blew the game wide open, 9-2. Junior
Jake Danneman (Edgewood, Ky.) collected the final run with a single to left securing the game one win.
GAME TWO
ON THE MOUND
Sophomore
John Girard (Richmond, Ind.) got the start in game two throwing a complete game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hanover pounced first using a one run fourth inning for the 1-0 lead.
However, the Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the inning before adding two runs in the fifth inning to push the difference to 3-1.
The Panthers got one run back in the eighth inning as junior
Reid Douglas (Rossville, Ind.) collected the RBI with a single to right field, 3-2.
Despite a ninth inning threat at the plate, Transylvania was able to retire the side and secure the HCAC split.
Hanover returns to action on Sunday, March 24 when they play host to Defiance. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
