HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover College women's soccer team picked up another non-conference victory on Sunday afternoon, shutting out visiting Wittenberg University 2-0.
INSIDE THE STATS Hanover dominated the offensive tempo from start to finish, racking up a decisive 23-7 advantage in total shots and testing the Tigers with 14 shots on frame compared to Wittenberg's four. Both squads earned four corner kick opportunities on the day.
Freshman
Abby Smith powered the Panther attack with a match leading five shots, putting three on target and scoring twice. Junior
Emma Gill was also dangerous in the final third, firing four shots, while freshman
Lyla Jacobs added four attempts of her own. Senior
Ally Byrd chipped in two shots on goal to round out Hanover's balanced front line.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kendall Moore anchored the Panther defense across all 90 minutes between the pipes, stopping all four shots she faced to secure the clean sheet.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers broke through midway through the opening half behind a rapid two-goal burst from
Abby Smith.
In the 23rd minute, freshman
Corinne Stevens connected with Smith, who drove in a shot to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later in the 26th minute, junior
Kaleigh Schirmer set up Smith for another finish, quickly doubling the Panthers' advantage to 2-0 before halftime.
Hanover's defense and midfield controlled the tempo the rest of the way, turning aside Wittenberg's counterattacks to lock down the multi-goal shutout.
