Panthers suffer setback to Bellarmine

Box Score

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover women's tennis team fell at home Sunday afternoon to NCAA Division II foe, Bellarmine (Ky.), 9-0.

Hanover (1-1) opened its dual-match season Saturday at HCAC institution, Earlham, winning 9-0. The Panthers returned home for the second of back-to-back matches, but ultimately dropped each set to the Knights (1-0).

Two of the three doubles matches were decided by a count of 8-3. Junior Susie WInternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind.) competed in the No. 2 spot, while sophomore Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind.) and freshman Haley Parker (Leo, Ind.) were slotted in the No. 3 contest.

Winternheimer nearly took her singles match to three sets, but the Knights' No. 3 competitor denied her the opportunity in a 7-6, opening set decision. The junior lost the set-tiebreaker, 7-3, and then fell in the second frame, 6-1.

Parker and sophomore Caroline Millard (Cincinnati, Ohio) were the only other two single competitors for HC to take a game in each set, but both fell, 6-1, 6-1. The duo competed in the No. 4 and 6 slots respectively.

Hanover will look to bounce back as they return to conference play next weekend against Rose-Hulman. The Panthers and Engineers will square off in a rematch of the 2016 HCAC Tournament Championship, in Hanover, at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 23.
