Box Score HANOVER, Ind. –Despite six combined goals from senior Mallory Fogus (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and sophomore Kinna Laymon (Fishers, Ind.), the Hanover women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak snapped by Carroll (Wis.) Monday evening, 14-10.
Playing for the second day in a row, a slow start defensively hurt the Panthers (4-3), as they allowed 11 first half goals to the Pioneers (5-0). Hanover trailed by three entering the break.
The high-scoring first half that featured 19 total goals, saw HC take an early 2-1 advantage after a free position score from sophomore Meg Finn (Newburg, Ind.) and another goal by classmate Sarah Todd (Columbus, Ohio). Carroll however, scored five answered goals over the next nine minutes to capture a 6-2 advantage with 17:23 remaining in the first half. Junior Rachel Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) improved her team-leading season assist total to five after recording a helper on Todd's goal.
Fogus did all of her scoring damage over the final 17 minutes of the opening half, as back-to-back goals sparked a 4-1 scoring spurt for the Blue and Red. Sophomore Emma Boomershine (Louisville, Ky.) scored one of her two goals during the run and Laymon capped it at the 6:38 mark off an assist from sophomore Laurel Atchison (Florence, Ky.). Hanover trailed by one, 7-6. The Pioneers responded with four more scores before the break and a goal from Fogus with just over one minute showing on the clock pulled the Panthers within three, 11-8.
With the shots nearly identical in the first half, Carroll applied more offensive pressure in the second half to enjoy a 32-22 edge for the game. Sophomore Julia Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) entered the game as the Panthers' goalkeeper in the second half, making 10 saves and holding the Pioneers to just three goals.
Unfortunately for HC, they would not find the back of the net until the 16:04 mark of the second half, one of Laymon's two free position goals in the final 30-minute session. Laymon added her second of the half at 8:52 to pull the Panthers back within three, but another Carroll goal late ended any hopes of a comeback attempt.
To go along with her 10 second half saves, Long was one of six Hanover players that had multiple groundballs, retrieving three. Senior Cassidy Coates (Evansville, Ind.) recorded a season-high six groundballs to pace the Panthers.
Classmate Abby Shroyer (Zionsville, Ind.), along with Long, tied for the team-high in caused turnovers with two apiece. Shroyer, Finn and Fogus all recorded five draw controls as well.
Hanover will return to action this weekend with back-to-back home games at Alumni Stadium. The Panthers open the stretch at 3:30 p.m., Friday, March 23, against Olivet (Mich.).
