Women's tennis stays unbeaten with 8-1 win over Transy

Box Score

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Hanover women's tennis team stayed unbeaten with an 8-1 win against Transylvania Wednesday evening at the Top Seed Racquet Club.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action. The Blue and Red have also extended their current HCAC regular season win streak to 43 matches.

Hanover got off to a strong start, winning two out of the three doubles contests. Highlighting doubles play were junior Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind.) and sophomore Haley Parker (Leo, Ind.). The duo posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, their first official victory as a pair this fall. Taking the No. 3 spot by a count of 8-1 were junior Lizzy Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.) and sophomore Addison Laker (Indianapolis, Ind.).

Singles competition followed shortly after, with Hanover defeating Transylvania (2-4, 2-1 HCAC) in all six matches. Sophomore Mia Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind.) was the first to finish, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 6. Katzenberger is now 11-0 during singles action as a Panther.

Securing the team victory for HC was senior Ruth Gaston (Indianapolis, Ind.), who stayed unbeaten in singles competition this fall with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4. Jones and senior Susie Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) added straight set victories as well, taking the Nos. 1 and 3 matches by counts of 6-4, 6-4 and 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), respectively.

Singles play also saw Laker and junior Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind.) need three sets each to stay unbeaten on the season. Laker took the No. 5 slot by a count of 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, while Farrell won at No. 2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The Blue and Red are off to their best start in over a decade and Wednesday's match marked the first official team point the team has conceded all season. Hanover took two out of three doubles matches against Indiana-Southeast last Saturday, with that contest scheduled to resume with singles competition later this week. Hanover is also one of two remaining undefeated teams in the HCAC, as they are tied with Franklin at 3-0 in league play.

The Panthers and Grenadiers are set to resume their match, in Hanover, at 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28.
