Panthers Drop Non-Conference Battle with Hope

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Panthers dropped a non-conference double-header on Saturday afternoon as they traveled north to take on Hope College. The Panthers fell in a competitive opener 2-1 before dropping the night cap 13-5.

The Blue and Red move to 4-6 overall on the season while the Flying Dutchmen sit at 2-1 overall.

In game one, Junior Lily Beurman (Evansville, Ind.) got the call to the circle pitching a complete game with nine strikeouts. The junior surrendered one earned run on five hits while walking one batter.

Hanover struck first in the non-conference match-up with Hope as senior Shelby Edington (New Goshen, Ind.) hit a lead of double in the top of the second inning that set the stage for freshman Nikki Bridgers (Florence, Ky.). Bridgers delivered for Hanover as she hit a shot to right field that plated Edington for the go-ahead run, 1-0. The bottom half of the inning saw a Hope three-up, three-down as Beurman charted two of three outs from the circle.

The Flying Dutchmen threatened the lead in the bottom of the third inning as they were able to load the bases before another Beurman strikeout followed by a pop-up retired the side. However, they would strike in the bottom of the fifth inning after a Panther hiccup allowed a Hope base runner to advance to scoring position. The runner would score off the bat of Arinn King who singled to the middle infield scoring the game tying run, 1-1.

The final dagger came in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Flying Dutchmen capitalized on another Hanover error that saw the game-winning run cross home plate, 2-1.

In game two, the Panthers charged ahead early as junior Mackenzie Smith (Jeffersonville, Ind.) singled before junior Rachel Cox (Indianapolis, Ind.) sent a ball to the outfield that advanced Smith to second. She would late score on a freshman Kendra Hutchison (Lafayette, Ind.) single that plated the game's first run.

However, Hope responded in the bottom half of the inning plating six runs on three hits for the 6-1 advantage. They tacked on another run in the second inning and two in the third inning for the commanding 9-1 lead.

The Panthers looked to claw their way back into the contest as they used a four run fifth inning led by Beurman, Edington, and Bridegers all with RBI to cut the deficit to 9-5. But the Flying Dutchmen deemed to much as they plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the series sweep.

Hanover returns to action on Sunday, March 8 as they welcome Denison for their home opener at Kops-Bedel Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:00 PM.
