Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ill. - Hanover (4-7 overall) hit the road for non-conference action hosted by Millikin. The Panthers opened the day defeating Cornell 7-0 before falling in extra innings to Benedictine 11-7.
GAME ONE
AT THE DISH
Junior
Josh Simpson (Bardstown, Ky.) and sophomore
Nickey Gutzwiller (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced the offense with two RBI apiece. Simpson posted a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a run scored.
The Panthers got the scoring started in the seventh as he singled scoring senior
Reid Douglas (Rossville, Ind.).
The scoring ensued in the eighth inning with Douglas singling before junior
Trevor Jones (Indianapolis, Ind.) collected an RBI, 4-0. Gutzwiller added the final run with a single that scored the final two runs.
ON THE MOUND
Junior
John Girard (Richmond, Ky.) pitched a complete game shutout allowing just three hits. He added six strikeouts en route to his first win of the season.
GAME TWO
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Benedictine surged ahead in the top of the first inning plating two runs. However, Hanover responded in the bottom of the third inning with a four spot. Leading the charge was senior
Jake Danneman (Edgewood, Ky.) with an RBI single. The big stick from senior
David Newbanks (New Albany, Ind.) pushed Hanover on top as he hit a three RBI double, 4-2.
But Benedictine remained poised at the dish, adding two runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning to reclaim a 6-4 difference.
The Hanover offense continued to produce runs, as a three-run eighth inning flipped the score back in their favor. The senior duo of Danneman and Douglas remained clutch, scoring one run apiece, 7-6.
The Eagles refused to be denied finding a clutch run in the ninth inning to force extras. They would tack on four runs in the top of the 10
th inning to secure the non-conference win.
ON THE MOUND
Senior
Chris Hautman (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) got the start for the Blue and Red throwing five complete innings with six strikeouts. He surrendered just two hits.
Simpson was among a slew of relief pitches for Hanover, throwing one and two thirds innings.
Closing out the contest for Hanover was senior Ashton Dickman (Greenfield, Ind.).
Hanover returns to action on Sunday, March 16 when they take on Millikin. First pitch is slated for 1:00 PM.
